How To Put Together Your List Of Creditors

letters from creditorsFiling bankruptcy requires you to file certain information with the United States Bankruptcy Court.  One of these documents is the mailing matrix or list of creditors.  It is in your best interest to provide an accurate list in order for your creditors to receive actual notice of your case filing.  Sometimes clients are not aware of every creditor they have or do not know where to find them.

I recommend that clients visit this page to obtain their three separate credit reports.  You can obtain this information for FREE once a year.  This is the starting point for your list of creditors.  Once you get the reports it is important to go through the list to see what is being reported and what is missing from your report.  I also recommend that you get at least two of the three reports, if not all three, since experience has shown some creditors might not report to all three credit bureaus.

After reviewing this information either write down a list of bills not showing up on the reports or provide your attorney with a copy of the actual bill (i.e. medical bills, utility bill, etc.).  You can also keep track of creditors that are contacting you via telephone and add these companies to your list of creditors.  If you happen to leave a creditor or two off of your list there is time to add them later, usually accompanied by a small filing fee paid to the Court.
